ONEONTA, NY - Junior Kaitlyn Hresko (Gibbstown, NJ/ Paulsboro) headed in a 40-yard cross off the foot of Lacey Habicht (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/ Pascack Hills) to cap a 2-1 overtime victory as Marywood (1-1) defeated host Hartwick College (0-1) this afternoon at the 7th annual Erinn K. Brozman Cup.
Junior Julie Kessler (Canton, CT/Canton) put the Hawks up 1-0 just over five minutes into the game when she collected a failed clear attempt, cut a defender inside the 18 and rifled a shot over the outstretched arms of Marywood keeper Meghan Coyle (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott). Marywood would allow just one more Hartwick shot while taking six of their own the rest of the half.
Down a goal with just under fifteen remaining, Marywood applied more pressure on the Hawks' back line and finally broke through when Siobhan Blancaflor (Haddam, CT/Haddam-Killingworth) slotted a ball down the left flank from Habicht and beat a Hartwick defender before beating Hawk keeper Alyssa Rondo (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) for the tying goal.
Hartwick got some dangerous chances early in the second half but could not get the ball past Coyle again on the day. After one scoreless overtime in which each team took two shots only to have the keepers come up big, Marywood was awarded a direct kick at the bottom of the center circle with two minutes remaining. Habicht sent a long cross in to the far corner of the six and Hresko's header beat the charging Rondo for the game-winner. Marywood out-shot the hosts 14-13 on the day while the Hawks had a 7-3 advantage in corners. Coyle finished with five saves in 108:38 of action while Rondo collected three saves.
In the second game of the day, Delaware Valley College (1-1) netted a pair of second half goals to fly past Utica College (0-1), 2-0. Junior Ariel Butera (New Cumberland, PA/Red Land) put the Aggies on the board in the 64th minute when she connected following a pass from freshman Marianne Morton (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley). Morton added a marker in the 70th minute of the game with assist from Johanna Lovallo (Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge).
Utica held a narrow 8-7 advantage in shots. Jocelyn Rivera (Yonkers, NY/Gorton) made two saves for the Pioneers, as Miranda Schieler (Lansdowne, PA/Archbishop Prendergast) and Julie Burnell (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) split time in net, with Burnell picking up five saves.
Marywood will seek its third Brozman Cup title Sunday when they take on Utica College at 1:00 pm. Hartwick will take on Delaware Valley College for the last match of the day at 4 p.m.
