Hawks Continue to Roll With Sweep of Skidmore College

ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's swimming and diving teams continued their winning ways on Sunday as both squads swept Skidmore College in Moyer Pool. The Hartwick men's team, winner of four straight since the New Year, defeated the Skidmore men 138-82. The 'Wick women won 137-78 for their second straight triumph.

With the two victories, Hartwick head coach Dale Rothenberger inches closer to a career milestone. He has led his men to 211 wins and the women to 187 victories for a total of 398 in his 26 seasons at the helm. A sweep next weekend at Saint Lawrence would give him 400 wins.

The 'Wick men's team won with relative ease on Sunday, winning all 13 events. Five different Hawks earned double victories on the day, including juniors Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY) and Michael Phillips (Austin, TX), sophomores Lydon Schultz (Mount Pleasant, SC) and Kenny Kleso (Milford, PA), and freshman John Wojtech (Bremerton, WA).

Morey won both diving events, taking the 1-meter with a score of 242.30, and the 3-meter competition with a 254.25. Phillips took the distance free events winning the 1000 free (10:03.13) and the 500 free (4:49.98). Schultz (pictured) was victorious in the 50 free (22.40) and 100 free (49.37), while Kleso won the 200 IM (2:05.47) and 100 fly (56.86) events. Wojtech earned top honors in the 200 free (1:50.44) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.40).

Sophomore Cody Cupit (Nacogdoches, TX) scored the only other individual win for the men. He took the 100 backstroke race in 56:07.

Cupit also combined with Phillips, Kleso, and Kaird Durocher (Bethlehem, PA) to win the 200 medley relay (1:40.54). Schultz, Durocher, James Sanders (Sharon, MA), and Luke Grunewald (New Windsor, NY) were the victors in the 200 free relay to close the day's festivities.

Like the men, the women's team earned a comfortable win. The Hawks won all 11 swimming events with seven different athletes earning firsts. Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) and Sam McFarland (Derry, PA) won two events apiece. Ha was first in the 200 IM (2:15.38) and the 100 fly (1:00.01). McFarland won the 200 free (2:01.54) and 500 free (5:27.97). Ha and McFarland also teamed with Sarah Uminski (Falmouth, ME) and Kelly Shanley (Rockville Centre, NY) to take the 200 free relay (1:59.82). Ha, Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL), Claire Nelson (South Hadley, MA), and Kristie Grunert (Oakland, CA) were tops in the 200 medley relay.
