ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's swimming and diving teams swept St. Lawrence on the road on Saturday to give 26-year head coach Dale Rothenberger his 400th victory at Hartwick. The Hawk women defeated the Saints, 148-81, with the men earning a 152-67 win over their counterparts. Rothenberger now has guided the 'Wick men to 212 wins and the women to 188 victories over the course of his career.
The Hartwick women, who improve to 9-5 this season, won 12 of 13 events on the day. Erin Holladay (Everett, WA), Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA), Sam McFarland (Derry, PA), and Lindsay Bowker (Bothell, WA) each won two individual events to lead the Hawks. Holladay won the 1000 free (11:18.81) and 500 free (5:31.88) races. Ha earned wins in the 200 individual medley (2:15.27) and 100 butterfly (1:00.43). McFarland took the 100 free (56.76) and 200 free (2:01.31), and Bowker earned top scores in the 1-meter diving (196.45) and 3-meter diving (210.30) competitions.
Ha, Robyn Smith (Jupiter, FL), Claire Nelson (South Hadley, MA), and Kristie Grunert (Oakland, CA) got things started with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The quartet edged out the Saints' team by .70 seconds in a time of 1:57.14. Smith would also finish first in the 50 free (25.99). She was second in the 100 backstroke by just .15 seconds. Nelson took top honors in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.64).
Grunert, McFarland, Sarah Uminski (Falmouth, ME) and Madeline Quick (Jaffrey, NH) combined to win the 200 free relay event in a final time of 1:46.38.
The 'Wick men's team is now 11-3 on the season and still unbeaten in 2011. The men, like the women, won 12 of 13 events. The Hawks were led by Kenny Kleso (Milford, PA), Josh Morey (Gloversville, NY), and John Wojtech (Bremerton, WA), who were all double winners. Kleso took the 200 free (1:49.81) and 500 free (4:54.43) races. Morey earned top scores in the 1-meter (228.70) and 3-meter (239.35) diving events. Wojtech finished first in the 200 IM (2:04.58) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.39).
Luke Grunewald (New Windsor, NY), Brad Ranson (Pennington, NJ), Chris Willcox (Dresher, PA), and Trey Ostrum (Oxford, NY) each earned first-place individual finishes. Grunewald swam well in the 1000 free with a time of 10:16.15. Ransom won the 50 free race in 22.96. Willcox was first in the 100 fly (54.52), and Ostrum won the 100 free (49.98).
Wojtech, Ranson, Ostrum, and William MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY) teamed up to win the 200 medley relay to begin the day for 'Wick. Sam Rosenthal (Takoma Park, MD), Matt Souza (Mansfield, MA), Todd Mayton (Hartwick, NY), and Oliver Schultz (Concord, MA) won the 200 free relay in 1:33.91.
Rothenberger has now guided his teams to winning seasons 39 times. He has piloted the men's program to 21 winning seasons and the women's program to 18 in his 26 seasons at the helm.
Both swimming and diving teams next compete in their final head-to-head meets of the season next Saturday as the Hawks host Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. Both Duck teams are ranked 9th in the latest NCAA Division III national poll. The day will serve as Hartwick's Senior Recognition and Parent Appreciation Meet.
