ONEONTA, NY- The women's volleyball team had little trouble with visiting Utica as they defeated the Pioneers 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-10) on Friday night at the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Invitational.
Brianna Eckert (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) led the team with 14 digs. Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) chipped in 12 digs. Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) contributed 15 assists. Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) led with seven kills and also had five blocks.
In the second match of the evening, Hartwick fell to Hamilton 3-0 (19-25, 10-25, 16-25). Mausert led with 10 kills and also chipped in seven digs. Desmond had eight kills. Eckert contributed 15 digs. McGee had 15 assists.
The teams were neck and neck in the first set. The match was tied 11-11 but Hamilton started to pull away and their lead was as much as 21-15. The Hawks could not reduce the deficit as the Continentals eventually won the set 25-19.
Hamilton proved to be too much in the second set as they built leads of 11-3 and 18-7 before eventually winning 25-10.
The Hawks return to the court tomorrow afternoon when they will face SUNY Plattsburgh at 12 pm. The Cardinals won both of their matches as they defeated Hamilton 3-2 and Utica 3-0. Utica and Hamilton also play at noon tomorrow.
