ONEONTA, NY- The women's volleyball team faced Hamilton College in the championship match of the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Invitational and fell 3-2 to the Continentals on Saturday afternoon at Lambros Arena.
The championship was a rematch from last night in which Hamilton won 3-0. The Hawks took the opening set 25-16 but fell in the next two 10-25 and 21-25 before tying the game by winning the fourth set 27-25. The fifth and deciding frame would go to the Continentals as they won 15-9 to claim the Invitational.
Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) had a double-double with 10 kills and 21 digs. Brianna Eckert Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) accumulated a season high 28 digs. Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) contributed 16 digs. Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) made 27 assists. Courtney Desmond (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) also had a double-double with 12 kills and 11 total blocks.
Earlier in the day, the Hawks defeated SUNY Plattsburgh 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-23). Mausert had a double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs. Vitale chipped in 11 digs while Eckert contributed 10 digs. McGee had 21 assists and Desmond had 10 kills.
Mausert and Desmond were both named to the All-tournament team.
Hartwick (12-15) will next compete in the Empire 8 Crossover at St. John Fisher next weekend. The Hawks will face Elmira at 5 p.m. on Friday.
