Red Dragons Defeat Hawks in President’s Match

ONEONTA, NY- The women's volleyball teams hosted cross-city rival Oneonta State in the second annual President's Match at Lambros Arena on Friday night. The Red Dragons were victorious as they defeated the Hawks 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19). It was also Hartwick Senior Night and before the game, Courtney Desmond (Corltandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) and Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) were recognized.

Mausert had 12 digs and added five kills. Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) led in kills with 13. Brianna Eckert (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) had a season-high 31 digs to lead the team. Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) chipped in 21 digs. Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) had 28 assists. Desmond made seven kills, had six digs, and blocked four shots.

Jessica Zurega led the Red Dragons with 22 digs. Kacy Boburka had a team-high 16 kills and Erica Darpino contributed 11 kills. Britany Calvello chipped in 12 digs.

Hartwick took the first set 25-18 as the Hawks led from start to finish. Hartwick had the lead at one point in the second set 8-4 before the Red Dragons rattled off four straight points to tie it up. Hartwick would regain the lead at 9-8 but Oneonta then went ahead 11-10 and led the rest of the way. The Hawks would keep it close throughout and got to within one point of tying the set up at 20-19, but Oneonta would get five straight points to take the set and even it up at one game each.

In the third set, 'Wick's last lead was at 11-9 before the Red Dragons tied it up and then went ahead 16-12. The closest Hartwick would get was 18-16, but Oneonta was too much as they took the set 25-18.

The final frame saw the Red Dragons take the early lead. At one point, Oneonta led 10-5 but the Hawks would fight back to keep it tight and got the score to 20-17. It was not enough, however, as the Red Dragons pulled away at the end to take the set and the match.

Hartwick (12-20) will play its final match tomorrow at Oneonta when it takes on Sage College at 11 a.m. at the Dig Pink Invitational.
