SCHENECTADY, NY – The Hartwick women's soccer team played #20 ranked Union College on Wednesday night and were defeated by the Dutchwomen 4-1 at College Park. Hartwick is now 2-6 overall while Union improves to 11-1 on the season.
Jennifer Mansfield had a goal and an assist, both in the first half, as the Dutchwomen scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the contest to take control of the game early on.
Mollie Gilchrist gave Union an early lead, finishing low off a Mansfield cross at 3:34 of the first half.
Just over four minutes later, Mansfield scored her third goal of the season from inside the 18 yard box, cutting to her left and firing a shot into the top right corner at 8:08 for a 2-0 Union lead.
Michaela Katz struck at 9:26 with a shot from 25 yards out that hit off of Hartwick goalkeeper Teagan Waddingham (Coeymans Hollow, NY/Ravena-Coeymans Selkirk) and into the net just inside the near post.
The Hawks scored on their lone shot on goal in the first half. Julie McNeff (Watervliet, NY/Catholic Central) sent a low cross to Katie Schild (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott), who finished with a tap-in goal at 30:51. Schild extended her scoring streak to five games and has scored a goal in the last three games.
Julia Shively closed out the scoring early in the second half, recording her second goal of the season off a corner kick service from Gilchrist at 54:04.
Waddingham had one save in 12:29 of playing time. She was replaced by Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne) who made three saves.
The Dutchwomen held a 15-5 shot advantage for the contest and had eight shots on net. Each team had six corner kicks in the contest.
Hartwick returns home to host Nazareth on Saturday in an Empire 8 contest at 1 p.m. at Elmore Field.
