Hawks Suffer Heartbreaking Loss to Golden Flyers

ONEONTA, NY- The women's soccer team played tough defense against visiting Empire 8 foe Nazareth and forced the game into double OT but the Golden Flyers scored with just over a minute left in the second extra frame to come away with a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Hartwick falls to 2-7 on the year and 0-4 in the Empire 8 while Nazareth improves to 5-2-3 overall and 2-0-1 in the Empire 8.

Despite being outshot 19-7, Hartwick's defense shut down any chance that Nazareth had to score. The Golden Flyers did have an opportunity early in the second half to take the lead but Erica Conte's shot hit the right post. Her next shot just four minutes later went well high of the goal.

The Golden Flyers would only get one shot in the first overtime as 'Wick kept the ball out of their zone.

The game seemed like it was heading to a tie but with 1:09 remaining of the second overtime, Nazareth's Sarah Eichelberger fought through the crowd to score past the Hawks' Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) to give the Golden Flyers the victory.

Brown was a force in goal for Hartwick as she stopped every shot that came to her. She finished with 11 saves while Naz's Abbie Carey made four saves.

Hartwick heads on the road tomorrow to take on Alfred at 2 p.m.
