SCHENECTADY, NY– Six different Hawks scored at least seven points as Hartwick College's women's basketball team defeated Union on the road on Tuesday night in Schenectady by a final score of 59-49. The Hawks, who took the lead with 14 and a half minutes to play in the first half and never relinquished it, led by double digits throughout the second half of play. Hartwick evens its record at 2-2 with the victory. The Dutchwomen, who were playing in their season opener, are 0-1.
The Hawks were led by Maria Foglia's (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central HS) 11 points. Josefine Vincents (Vallensbak, Denmark/Kent School) added 10, Kait Veit (Easthampton, MA/Holyoke Catholic) scored nine, and Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) chipped in with eight.
The Hawks doubled up the Dutchwomen through the first 20 minutes, 28-14. Hartwick shot 41% as a team on 11-of-27 shooting, including a 5-of-9 (56%) showing from three-point range in the first half. 'Wick also held Union to just five baskets and 23% shooting in the stanza.
Foglia (8), Vincents (7), and Purcell (6) combined for 21 of the Hawks' 28 points in the half. Foglia and Purcell also hit two treys apiece.
In the second half, 'Wick led by at least 10 points or more. The Dutchwomen trimmed the lead to 11 points, 40-29, with just over 10 minutes to go in the game on a pair of free throws from Brittney Kenney. Hartwick, however, pulled away with a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to open up its biggest lead of 23 points, 54-31.
Veit hit two of her three triples on the night and Vincents and Lee Arduini (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) each hit one three-pointer in the big Hawk run. The Dutchwomen made it close in the waning minutes as they finished the game on an 18-5 run over the final 4:56.
Arduini and Carlee Hirt (Beacon, NY/John Jay-E. Fishkill) each added seven points for Hartwick in the contest. Hirt also grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
The Blue and White shot season-highs of 45.8% (22-for-48) from the floor and 50% (10-for-20) from three-point range. The Hawks held Union to only 32.6% shooting on the evening.
Shayla Madden notched 14 points to lead her team. Kenney scored 11 and she tied for a game-high seven rebounds with teammate Rachel Beaulac.
Hartwick next plays on Tuesday, November 29 at the Sage Colleges. The Hawks and Gators tip off at 7 p.m. Union next plays on Saturday at the St. John Fisher Tournament versus Pitt-Bradford.
