ONEONTA, NY – Freshman Brittany McCabe (Manorville, NY/East-South Manor) and junior Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) combined for nine of Hartwick's goals in the Hawks' 17-11 win over visiting Marywood University on Friday evening at Wright Stadium. With the victory, Hartwick begins the campaign with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2001.
McCabe registered five goals and an assist on the day. She also tied for a team-high with three draws. LaVaute tallied four times, caused a game-high five turnovers, won three draws, and grabbed three ground balls.
The Hawks started quickly, scoring three times in the opening 6:02. LaVaute, Aly Davis (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles), and Erica Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) notched the goals for 'Wick. Marywood would answer with a goal before McCabe pushed the lead back to three with nine minutes elapsed.
With just over 12 minutes to go in the half, Marywood would gain the upper hand with five unanswered goals in a 2:29 span to take a 6-4 advantage. Kimberly Commisso notched two of the Pacer tallies.
LaVaute and McCabe quickly countered for the Hawks with goals 15 seconds apart to tie the score at 6-6. Marywood's Sarah Coughy and Hartwick's Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon) each found the net in the final four and a half minutes to close out the half with the score knotted at seven.
The Hawks controlled play in the first 15 minutes of the second half to take control. McCabe tallied two goals and Lavaute, Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran), Ali Sisco (Kendall Park, NJ/S. Brunswick), and Kennedy each netted one as the Hawks rallied for six straight goals to take a commanding 13-7 lead with 14:38 to go in the game.
Taylor McKeown keyed a Marywood comeback with three goals over the next seven minutes as the Pacers cut the deficit to four, 15-11, with just over seven minutes remaining. McCabe and Scicchitano, however, would halt the run and put the game away with unassisted tallies over the final 5:03.
'Wick's Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland), the reigning Empire 8 Goalkeeper of the Week, notched 13 saves in the game. It marks her second-highest save total in a game over the last two seasons. She also contributed four ground balls and a caused turnover in the game. Defender Bianca Gianfrate (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) caused two Marywood turnovers and registered four ground balls.
Commisso finished the game with three goals, four ground balls, and a game-high 10 draws for the Pacers. McKeown had three tallies and Diana D'Achille scored two. Keeper Megan Plantz made nine saves in the Marywood cage.
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow at home against SUNY Maritime at 4 p.m.
