New Paltz Outlasts Hartwick, 10-9

            ONEONTA, NY – Visiting SUNY New Paltz netted the game-winning goal with just over 21 seconds to play in a 10-9 victory over Hartwick's women's lacrosse team on Thursday at Wright Stadium. The loss is the first of the season for Hartwick (3-1). New Paltz remains unbeaten at 5-0.
            Brittany Hunt took a feed in front from teammate Bridgitte Hooker and beat 'Wick keeper Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) for the winner. Hartwick, which trailed four separate times in the second half, fought back to even the score at 9-9 with just over a minute left on the clock. New Paltz had taken the lead with 2:05 to play but junior Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon) answered exactly one minute later, scoring from in close following a pass from Brittany McCabe (Manorville, NY/East-South Manor).
            'Wick's Ali Sisco (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) secured the ensuing draw but the visitors forced a turnover with 41 seconds left and raced downfield for the go-ahead tally. Maggie Rose Melito grabbed the last draw of the game and New Paltz ran out the clock for the victory.
            Hartwick finished the game with advantages in shots (28-23), and draws (12-9). New Paltz had the edge in ground balls (23-16).
            McCabe and Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY/Cortland) each led 'Wick with two goals and an assist each. Kennedy added a goal and an assist and Ryan McGovern (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point), Erica Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harborfields), Aly Davis (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles), and Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) added one goal apiece. Kaye made eight stops and grabbed a game-high six ground balls and caused two turnovers.
            After over 12 minutes of end-to-end play between the two teams, Hartwick jumped in front with two tallies 3:31 apart. McCabe opened the scoring with an unassisted tally and Kate O'Shea (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) found Walsh for her first goal of the day at the 14:06 mark.
            New Paltz finally broke through Kaye, who finished with six first-half saves, with just over eight minutes to go in the opening half. Davis and Samantha DelGaudio traded goals within 52 seconds of one another in the half to make the score 3-2.
            McCabe tallied on a free-position shot with 3:21 to go before New Paltz's Brittany Bennett answered 58 seconds later. McGovern closed out the first-half scoring, finishing off a dish from Kennedy and 'Wick led 5-3 at halftime.
            New Paltz scored four of the second half's first five goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second half to take its first lead of the day, 7-6. Four different players tallied with DelGaudio setting up three of the scores. Doyle tallied for Hartwick in the span.
            Walsh evened the game at 7-7 with 13 and a half minutes remaining and the score stayed tied until under eight minutes to play. DelGaudio gave New Paltz a one-goal edge, 8-7, with 7:20 left. Sisco then set up Scicchitano to tie it 4:02 later to set the stage for a back-and-forth final three minutes.
            DelGaudio led the New Paltz Hawks in points with two goals and four assists. Julia Donato added two goals and one helper. Hooker and Bennett ended the day with one goal and one assist each. Goalie Stefanie Mignone made 10 saves in the SUNY cage.
            Bennett, Erin Tornatore, and Talia Tesler each registered five ground balls to lead New Paltz. Tesler and Tornatore also caused three Hartwick turnovers apiece.
            Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) and Sisco had the game-high for draws with four each for 'Wick. Both players also combined for seven ground balls. LaVaute and Scicchitano joined Kaye with two caused turnovers each.
            Hartwick looks to rebound from the setback on Tuesday, March 29. The Hawks travel to Penn Yan Academy to face Keuka College at 7:30 p.m.
