Volleyball Notches First Win of Season

ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick women's volleyball team hosted Cazenovia College on Tuesday night and came away with their first victory of the season as they defeated the Wildcats 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-17, 25-14) at Lambros Arena.

Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) led the Hawks with 11 kills. Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor/Hendrick Hudson) had 30 assists. Lauren Mausert (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) contributed 14 digs and Brianna Eckert (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) chipped in with 11 digs. Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) made four service aces.

The Hawks started off the first game with a 14-6 lead and scored the final four points to win 25-12.
The Wildcats began the second game with a 2-0 lead. Three straight points by the Hawks gave them a 3-2 advantage. Cazenovia then tied it at four all and would go up 13-7. A five point 'Wick rally got them to within one point of tying the game and made it 13-12. A kill by Martin would make it a close 24-23 lead for the Wildcats and they would score the final point to take the second game 25-23.

Hartwick would take an 8-4 lead in the third game. The Hawks would maintain the four-point lead and eventually push their advantage to eight points and win the third game 25-17.

'Wick came out strong in the final set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. The Hawks - built a commanding 16-7 lead that they increased to 23-9 at one point. The Wildcats would rally late with five straight points to make it a 24-14 game, but Hartwick would come away victorious when Cazenovia's Julianne Heigel made a service error to give the Hawks the point.

The Hawks' next matches are this coming Friday at the Elmira Tournament when they go up against host Elmira at 3 p.m. and then Utica at 5 p.m.
