ROCHESTER, NY- Olivia Derleth scored in the 53rd minute and that would be all host Nazareth would need as the Golden Flyers took down Hartwick 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. The win improves Nazareth record to 8-4-3 and 3-2-1 in the Empire 8. The Hawks drop to 4-8-1 and 1-3-1 in the Empire 8.

The Golden Flyers played a physical first half to maintain control as they held a 13-3 advantage in shots. Their best scoring opportunity came in the 25th minute when Derleth sent a through ball to Emily Eichelberger who challenged Hartwick goalkeeper Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) to make the save. The score at halftime would remain 0-0.

Just over seven minutes into the second half, Nazareth would finally break through when Mel Gettys' corner kick found the head of Derleth who was able to find the inside of the goal to put Nazareth ahead 1-0.

The Hawks tried to answer back minutes later but Emily Thorndike's (Dover, MA/Dover Sherborn) shot was stopped by Nazareth goalkeeper Abbie Carey. Hartwick would attempt one more shot in the game by Brown in the 76th minute but it went wide of the goal.

“We played well and had some really good chances by Thorndike and Cristina Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East),” said Hartwick head coach Matt Verni. “Hope was outstanding in goal and we had another good effort against a good team.”

Brown had a season and career-high 13 saves in goal for Hartwick. Carey had two saves for the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth finished the game with a 23-6 advantage in shots and a 10-5 edge in corner kicks.

The Hawks remain on the road as they will face Elmira on Wednesday
