Hawk Volleyball Takes Second Place at Hartwick/Holiday Inn Invitational

ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick women's volleyball team split two matches on the second day of the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Lambros Arena.

In their first match of the day, the Hawks battled back from down 2-0 and won three straight sets to defeat Keuka 3-2 (11-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-12).

 Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) led the comeback win with 18 kills while Hannah Strom (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) chipped in 11 kills and Katie Ryan (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush) had 10. Britney Lintner (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) had 40 assists. Brianna Eckert (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) led the team in digs with 14.
The Storm built up leads of 14-8 and 23-10 to easily win the first set, 25-11. Keuka had a lead of 15-10 in the second set and eventually won 25-18.

Down 2-0, Hartwick would not back down. The Hawks would claim the third set 25-19 and the fourth set 25-22 to force the deciding fifth frame. 'Wick would get out to a 7-2 lead before Keuka would narrow the gap to 9-8. The Hawks lead stood at 10-9 but Hartwick would stave off any Keuka threat with a 5-3 run to end the set and win the match 3-2.

The win over Keuka set up a battle with Lebanon Valley in the championship match. Despite taking a 1-0 lead, the Dutchmen would win three straight sets to come away with the 3-1 (16-24, 25-21, 25-22, 25-11) victory over Hartwick. Strom paced the 'Wick effort with 12 kills. Martin added 11 kills. Linter was one dig short of a double-double with 33 assists and nine digs. Samantha Malcolm (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) chipped in eight digs.

Hartwick  led 11-9 in the first set before rattling off seven straight points to go up 18-9. The lead held up as the Hawks won 25-16.

The Dutchmen led for most of the second set but Hartwick would rally to knot the score at 15-all. Lebanon Valley would counter with a 6-0 run to go up 21-15. The Hawks would get as close as 24-21 but the Dutchmen would score the much needed final point to win the set 25-21.

The third set was a tight affair that featured seven ties. The set was tied up 21-21 before Lebanon Valley outscored the Hawks 4-1 to win 25-22.

The fourth set was never in doubt as the Dutchmen held a lead of  13-2 on their way to a 25-11 victory.

Hartwick's Martin and Strom were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Hawks (9-14) begin the final round of Empire 8 play next weekend in Utica. Hartwick will face the Pioneers next Saturday at 3 p.m. On Sunday, 'Wick will go against Nazareth at 10 a.m. followed by St. John Fisher at 12 p.m.
