Box Score

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick stormed back at the end of the contest but it was too little too late for the Hawks in a 2-1 non-conference defeat to Colgate University on Tuesday night on Elmore Field.

The Raiders jumped in front by two goals with 20 minutes to play in the game before Hartwick finally broke through in the 87th minute on a tally from Jhevaughn Beckford (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Boys' HS).

The Hawks earned a corner in the final minutes but could not produce the tying goal. Russell Oost-Lievense (Westport, CT/Staples HS), who assisted Beckford's score, had the final chance for the Hawks but his long-range effort was handled by Raider keeper Liam Stapleton.

With the loss, 'Wick drops to 3-4-2 overall. Colgate improves to 3-4-4 with the win.

Neither team had many changes in the opening 45 minutes of action. However, Colgate made good on its best, and quite possibly it's only chance of the half nearly 20 minutes in. On the right flank, Shane Conlin got a step on a Hartwick defender and he carried the ball deep into Hawk territory. His cross found leading scorer Mike Reidy just inside 18 yards and he volleyed past goalkeeper Mateo Munarriz (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) up high to his right for a 1-0 Raider lead.

The Hawks best chance of the half came following a corner with roughly three minutes to play. A corner by Tyler Bailey (Spencer, NY/Binghamton Univ.) was sent low into the box and played on by defender Jack Miller (Commack, NY/Commack) and the ball went to Ross MacKinnon (Glasgow, Scotland/Jordanhill School) six yards in front of Colgate's goal. MacKinnon went to the ground but still managed a left-footed shot, but the ball was deflected and cleared out of the goal mouth by a raider defender.

The first half ended with both teams even in shots, 3-3. They were also even in corners, 2-2.

Over the first 25 minutes of the second half, the Hawks held a 2-0 edge in shots. A Keefe shot from distance was saved by Stapleton and a Marc Russell (Glasgow, Scotland/Woodfarm HS) header went high over the bar.

Colgate added to its lead at 69:18. Roughly 35 yards from goal, Nick Arpey served a ball into the Hartwick box and Evan Heroux got his head to the ball before a charging Munarriz. The ball bounced into the goal just before Munarriz recovered to bat the ball out and the Raiders were up by a two-goal margin.

The Hawks pressed by their opening goal with two shots from Nathaniel Horton (Stowe, VT/Stowe HS) and David Styles (Bognor Regis, England/St. Phillip Howard) in the next six minutes. Horton's shot, however, went wide and Styles' was collected by Stapleton.

Finally at 86:04, Oost-Lievense served a ball into the box. Jason Keefe (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) got a piece of the ball and it took a quick deflection off Beckford and headed for the near post. Stapleton got his fingers to it but could not keep the ball out of his goal and the Hawks were within one. The goal marked Beckford's second of the season. Unfortunately for 'Wick it would mark its final solid scoring chance of the night and the Raiders emerged with the victory.

Hartwick closed the match with a 9-8 edge in shots. Colgate had the slight edge in corners, 6-5. Munarriz and Stapleton both finished with three saves.

The win for Colgate is just its seventh in the all-time series but its second in the last two seasons. Hartwick has the series advantage with a 37-7-4 record.

Hartwick returns to Mid-American Conference play this Saturday in Dekalb, IL. The Hawks play Northern Illinois Saturday at 2 p.m.
