Box Score
ONEONTA, NY- The host Oneonta State women's soccer team scored twice in the first half and that would be all it would need as the Red Dragons defeated Hartwick 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks fall to 3-6-1 overall while Oneonta improves to 7-3-1.
Oneonta State scored both of their goals within 4:14 of each other. Karly DeSimone scored first when her shot deflected off a 'Wick defender and past Hawk goaltender
Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) and into the goal. Later, Melissa Gugliemo passed to Kayla Brantmeyer across the box and Brantmeyer shot into the net to make it 2-0.
Hartwick would get on the board in the 31
st minute of the game. A handball foul was called on the Red Dragons which set up
Emily Thorndike (Dover, MA/Dover Sherborn) for a penalty kick. Her shot was rejected by Oneonta State goalkeeper Kelley Murphy but
Mackenzie Shipley (Sedro Wooley, WA/Sedro Wooley) took the rebound and punched it in past Murphy to make it a 2-1 game.
The second half was a defensive battle as neither team could generate any offense. The Red Dragons outshot the Hawks 8-1 in the period but Brown made four saves to prevent Oneonta State from increasing its lead. Hartwick's lone shot came just under four minutes left in the game when
Kylie Thayer's (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) corner kick was headed by
Cristina Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) but the shot went just wide of the goal.
Brown registered seven saves in goal for the Hawks. Murphy had three saves for the Red Dragons.
Hartwick returns to Empire 8 Conference play this Saturday when they take on Alfred University at Elmore Field. Game time will be at 2 p.m.
