UTICA, NY- The Hartwick volleyball team resumed Empire 8 competition as it played two five-set matches on Sunday afternoon against Nazareth and St. John Fisher on the campus of Utica College.
In their first match of the day, Hartwick came away with a 3-2 win over the Golden Flyers. It marked the first win since 1997 by the Hawks over Nazareth.
Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) led the team in kills with 22.
Hannah Strom (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) contributed 20 kills.
Britney Lintner (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) had 37 assists while
Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) chipped in with 13 assists.
Brianna Eckert (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) had 17 digs.
Hartwick needed a win against St. John Fisher in the afternoon match to qualify for the Empire 8 Tournament for the first time in program history. The Hawks had a 2-1 lead after the third set but the Cardinals rallied to win the final two sets to take the match 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 25-16, 16-25, 14-16).
Strom notched a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs. Martin again led the Hawks in kills with 16 and added eight digs.
Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St John the Baptist) contributed 12 digs while Eckert had 24. Lintner accumulated 35 assists.
Hartwick's record now stands at 11-15 overall and 3-4 in the Empire 8. The Hawks will host Cazenovia at Lambros Arena on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
