UTICA, NY- The Hartwick women's soccer team scored a season-high eight times and had little trouble with host SUNYIT in an 8-2 victory over the Wildcats on Monday night. Hartwick has now won three straight games and improves its record to 7-8-1 overall while SUNYIT falls to 8-9.
Cristina Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) scored a career-high three goals and assisted on another to lead 'Wick.
Mackenzie Shipley (Sedro Woolley, WA/Sedro Woolley) added a career-best two scores and also had an assist.
Stephanie Morini (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North),
Emily Thorndike (Dover, MA/Dover Sherborn), and
Kylie Thayer (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) all had one goal each.
The Hawks got off to a quick start when Shipley scored just 6:12 into the game. Later in the 22
nd minute, Sicari scored the first of her three goals when Wildcat goalkeeper Audrey Campbell came out to challenge but the ball got away and Sicari took advantage of the miscue and scored to put Hartwick up 2-0. Sicari would score again just over two and a half minutes later to give the Hawks a 3-0 advantage.
SUNYIT would cut into the Hawks lead in the 33
rd minute when Katie Driscoll hit a shot outside of the penalty box that angled over Hartwick goalkeeper
Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) and into the goal to make it a 3-1 game.
Thayer would net 'Wick's fourth goal of the game with just under two minutes left in the first period when she got behind the Wildcat defense for a one-on-one and beat a defender for a 4-1 halftime lead.
In the second half, Hartwick picked up where it left off less than four and a half minutes in, as Sicari scored her third goal of the game. Later in the 61st minute, Morini scored her fourth goal of the season. Stephanie Wurz scored for SUNYIT in the 74th minute and Hartwick would add two more goals in the final minutes of the contest to complete the scoring.
“We are happy to win the game and keep the streak going,” noted head coach Matt Verni. “Our speed up front and playmaking in central midfield created many scoring chances and we used them to our advantage.”
Brown had two saves in goal for the Hawks. She was replaced by
Abbie Thomas (McMinnville, OR/McMinnville) in the second half and she did not record a save in 8:09 of playing time. Campbell got the start for SUNYIT and had four saves. Margeret Werenczek made nine saves in relief.
Hartwick had an overwhelming advantage in shots, 33-15. 'Wick had a modest 7-2 lead in corner kicks.
The Hawks return home for their final game of the regular season on Saturday against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Game time will be at 6 p.m.
