ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick women's volleyball team played its final home match of the season and went out winners as it defeated Cazenovia 3-1 (17-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-19) on Tuesday night at Lambros Arena. With the win, Hartwick improves to 12-15 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 4-23.
Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) led 'Wick with nine kills and 10 digs.
Brianna Eckert (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) added eight digs.
Lauren Heiman (Dansville, NY/Dansville) contributed seven kills.
Britney Lintner (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) had 33 assists.
Samantha McCarthy had a double-double for Cazenovia with 11 digs and 19 assists. Megan Kresge and Erin Sweeney both chipped in eight digs. Julieann Heigel had eight kills.
Hartwick led 4-1 in the first set but the Wildcats would get back in the game and go on a 5-1 run to take a 6-5 lead. After the score was tied twice, Cazenovia would slowly build a lead that it would not relinquish and took the set 25-17.
The Wildcats took an early 2-1 lead in the second set but Hartwick would go on a 6-0 run to take the 8-2 lead. That lead would increase to 16-9 and the Hawks would use a 9-3 run to close out the set and even the match at 1-1.
Hartwick got off to a big lead in the third frame as it went up 6-0 and eventually 12-4. Cazenovia would narrow the gap with a furious rally and trailed at one point, 13-10. It would be as close as the Wildcats would get as the Hawks held them at bay and Heiman's kill ended the third set as it went to the Hawks, 25-20.
In the fourth and final set of the night, Cazenovia led 7-6 but six straight Hartwick points gave it a 12-7 lead. That lead increased to 15-8 until the Wildcats mounted a rally and only trailed at one point 19-18. It would be as close as they would get as 'Wick rattled off seven straight points punctuated by Strom's kill at the end that gave Hartwick the set and the win.
The match marked the final home game for Lintner, Heiman, Eckert, and
Shannon McGee (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas).
The Hawks return to action on Thursday night as Hartwick faces Oneonta State in the President's Match at 7 p.m.
