ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick volleyball team traveled down the road to square off with cross-city rival Oneonta State in the third annual Presidents' Match on Thursday evening and fell to the Red Dragons 3-1 (21-25, 13-25, 25-20, 22-25) at Dewar Arena. The Hawks drop to 12-16 overall while Oneonta State improves to 19-12.
Hannah Strom (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) had 15 kills to lead the team.
Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) added 14 kills and eight digs.
Brianna Eckert (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) contributed 11 digs.
Britney Lintner (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) had 28 assists.
Brittany Calvello had 17 assists, 12 digs, and eight kills for the Red Dragons. Kacy Boburka added 12 kills and six digs. Kristina Pelacio contributed 17 digs. Becca Horton chipped in 19 assists.
The Red Dragons built leads of 9-2 and 14-5 in the first set before the Hawks rallied and Oneonta was up by only 23-21. The Red Dragons would get the final two points to take the set 25-21.
In the second set, Hartwick trailed 8-6 early on but the Red Dragons would rattle off eight straight points to go ahead 16-6. The lead proved to be too much to overcome as Oneonta would go on to claim the set 25-13.
The Hawks had several one point leads in the third frame that they pushed to 15-12 and eventually to 22-19. From that point, 'Wick closed out the set on a 3-1 run to win 25-20.
Hartwick had leads of 10-8 and 12-11 in the fourth set but the Red Dragons would come back to go up 16-13. The Hawks would hang on and not let Oneonta to pull away as the score was knotted at 20-20. A couple of Hartwick errors allowed the Red Dragons to close out the set on a 5-2 run and win the match.
The Hawks will return to the Oneonta State campus for two matches on Saturday at the Dig Pink Invitational. Hartwick will face the City College of New York at 12 p.m. followed by the Sage Colleges at 2 p.m.
