Cristina Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) scored twice as the women's soccer team notched its first Empire 8 Conference win and defeated Alfred 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Elmore Field. Hartwick improves its record to 4-6-1 overall and is now 1-2-1 in the Empire 8. Alfred falls to 6-5 overall and 1-4 in the Empire 8.
The Hawks were in control of the game from start to finish as the outcome was never in doubt. Sicari scored her first goal of the afternoon a little over three minutes into the first half. Later in the 38th minute,
Mackenzie Shipley (Sedro Wooley, WA/Sedro Wooley) hit a corner kick that
Carly Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) headed into the goal to make it 2-0 Hartwick. A little more than two minutes later, Sicari had her second score of the game on a long shot that went over the outstretched hands of Saxon goalkeeper Ashley Frazell and into the net for a 3-0 Hawk lead.
Hartwick maintained its advantage throughout the second half of play as Alfred could not generate any pressure in the Hartwick zone. 'Wick would strike once again when Sicari connected with
Kylie Thayer (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) from the right side of the goal and Thayer collected the ball and made a shot that trickled past Frazell and in the goal for the Hawks' fourth and final goal of the day.
Hartwick held a commanding 23-1 lead in shots and had six corner kicks to none for Alfred.
Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) started in goal for Hartwick and only had one save. Frazell had 10 saves for the Saxons.
Hartwick returns to Elmore Field Monday night to face Houghton College in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Game time will be at 7 p.m.
