ONEONTA, NY- Despite outshooting Houghton 15-9 in the game, the Hartwick women's soccer team could not generate enough offense as the Hawks fell to the Highlanders 2-1 on Monday evening at Elmore Field. The win gives Houghton a record of 8-6 while the Hawks fall to 4-7-1.
Houghton got on the board first just over 10 minutes into the game. Hartwick goalkeeper
Hope Brown's (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) pass was misplayed by
Carly Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/ Hoosick Falls) and the Highlander's Jen Bowman capitalized on the mistake and shot past Brown and into the goal for the 1-0 lead.
The Hawks had chances to tie the game but their shots were just off the mark.
Cristina Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) had a good look at a goal in the 31st minute but saw her shot go just wide. Hartwick held the Highlanders to just two shots in the first half as the score remained 1-0 Houghton at halftime.
In the second half, Houghton had a chance to go up 2-0 in the 56
th minute of play but Erin Miller's shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play. Her second shot would be saved by Brown.
The Highlanders would take a 2-0 lead with a little under five minutes remaining in the game when Stephany Ellison dribbled the ball into the box, beat a defender, and fired a low shot that eluded Brown for the goal.
The Hawks, however, would get back in the game and on the board 31 seconds later when
Kylie Thayer (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) hit a shot that deflected off a Highlander defender and into the goal to make it a 2-1 game. In the end it was not enough as Houghton came away with the victory.
Brown stopped four shots in goal for the Hawks. Katie Phillips started and recorded two saves for Houghton. She was replaced by Shawna Sprout in the second half who had four saves.
The Hawks will go on the road to face Nazareth this Saturday at 2 p.m.
