Stevens Sweeps Hartwick Swimming

HOBOKEN, NJ- Hartwick's swimming teams traveled to Hoboken, NJ for meets with nationally-ranked teams from Empire 8 rival Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday. The 18th ranked Hartwick men suffered their first loss of the season and finish 16-1 while the women, ranked 30th, finish at 14-3.

The men were defeated by the #6 Ducks by the score of 160.5-101.5. Michael Phillips (Austin, TX) won two races for the Hawks. He took first in the 200 free (1:44.35) and the 200 breast (2:09.02). His time in the breast bested the Ducks' All-American John Hu by .31 of a second. Phillips also came in second to Hu in the 200 IM (1:57.08)

Other winners included Nick Mosconi (Gloversville, NY), John Wojtech (Bremerton, WA), Brad Ranson (Pennington, NJ) and Matt Behn (Windsor, NY). Mosconi was the winner of the mixed 200 free (1:53.39), Wojtech took the 100 breast (1:01.78), Ranson was first in the 100 free (48.85) and Behn claimed the mixed 100 free (51.99).

Luke Grunewald (New Windsor, NY) came in second in the 1000 free (9:53.21) and third in the 500 free (4:48.92). Cody Cupit (Nacogdoches, TX) was second in the 100 back (54.59) and third in the 200 back (1:58.15). Kenny Kleso (Milford, PA) finished second in the 100 breast (1:01.95)

Chris Willcox (Dresher, PA) added a pair of third-place finishes in the 200 fly (1:58.15) and the 100 fly (54.87). Lydon Schultz (Mt. Pleasant, SC) came in third in the 50 free (22.22).

The women lost to the #10 Ducks by the score of 163-97. Clare Nelson (South Hadley, MA) and Stephanie Ha (Everett, WA) were the lone individual winners on the day. Nelson won the 200 breast (2:32.77) and Ha took first in the 200 IM (2:13.59). Ha also was third in the 100 back (1:02.49) and second in the 100 fly (1:00.26). Nelson had a second-place finish in the 100 breast (1:12.31).

Gwen Mathias (Southington, CT) picked up a third-place finish in the 1000 free (11:06.87) and was second in the 500 free (5:24.97). Justine Woodend (Visalia, CA) came in second in the 100 free (54.52) and was tied for second with her sister Jade Woodend (Visalia, CA) in the 50 free (25.28).
The 400 free relay team of both Woodends, Maddy Quick (Jaffrey, NH), and Kaitlyn Campbell (Hanover Park, IL) won in a time of 3:46.35.

Both Hartwick teams close their dual meet seasons with College records for victories. The men shattered the previous mark of 12 set in 1991-92 with their 16 wins. The women set the record last weekend with a sweep of St. Lawrence and Oneonta, besting the previous benchmark of 13 set in 1989-90.

Both teams will compete again in two weeks at the Empire 8/UNYSCSA Championships in Webster, NY starting February 22.
