Women’s Lax Falls at #18 Stevens

HOBOKEN, NJ – The nationally 18th ranked Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks used seven goals over the final 7:43 of the first half to pull away from Hartwick in an 18-3 win on Saturday at DeBaun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, NJ.
           
Seniors Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon HS), Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles HS), and sophomore Meg Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs HS) each scored for Hartwick. Freshman Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro HS) dished out an assist for the Hawks.
           
The favored Ducks led by just two goals through the opening 15 minutes of the first half of play. The Hawks out-shot Stevens 4-3 over a seven-minute span after the Ducks took a 2-0 lead, but 'Wick could not best Duck goalkeeper Meg Collins. Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY/Cortland HS), Jweid, LaVaute, and Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran HS) all fired shots for the Hawks but Collins turned away all of them in the span.
             
Stevens made Hartwick pay with four goals in a 3:55 span to take a 6-0 advantage. Luce answered on a free-position shot with 9:36 remaining in the opening stanza, but the Ducks countered with three more scores in 74 seconds to up their edge and they added a fourth shortly thereafter.
           
Kennedy scored Hartwick's second goal with Jweid assisting with 4:32 left. Stevens closed the half with four more goals in the final 3:45 of the period for a 14-2 margin at intermission.
           
In the second half, the Ducks possessed the ball scoring once in the first 17 minutes. LaVaute tallied with under 11 minutes to play and the Ducks scored the last three goals of the game in the final eight minutes.
           
Hartwick freshman goalie Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs HS) made 12 saves in the contest. Collins finished with eight saves in 46 minutes of action. Sarah Prall relieved her for the final 14 minutes.
           
Stevens closed the match with a 36-14 edge in shots. The Ducks also held the advantage in ground balls, 24-15. The Hawks earned 12 draws to Stevens' 11.
           
Kennedy paced Hartwick with four ground balls on the day. Morgan Galipeau (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union HS) added three.
             
Jweid grabbed four draws for 'Wick. Kennedy contributed three.
           
Kara Rafferty led Stevens with four goals. Joey Galligan added three scores, and Spencer Waybright tallied twice and delivered four assists. Amanda Ingersoll secured a game-best eight ground balls.
           
Hartwick closes out the 2012 campaign on Tuesday night under the lights of Wright Stadium against cross-city rival Oneonta State.
