Women’s Soccer Falls to William Paterson in Mayor’s Cup

Stephanie Morini scored Hartwick's first goal of the game
Box Score ONEONTA, NY- Despite rainy conditions at Elmore Field, the women's soccer team played William Paterson in the second of two games at the Mayor's Cup.. The Pioneers scored three times in the second half to break a 2-2 tie and won 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Michelle Marabondo scored three times to lead the Pioneers. Erick Juricic and Jacquelyn Gage also scored for William Paterson. Stephanie Morini (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) and Emily Thorndike (Dover, MA/Dover-Sherborn) both had goals for the Hawks.

Under a torrential downpour, William Paterson scored quickly 1:03 into the first half when Marabondo's shot slipped past Hartwick goalkeeper Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville). Several minutes later the game was halted by a lightening. When play resumed, both sides traded shots until the 29th minute when Morini buried a shot from the left side of the goal past Pioneers goalkeeper Mary Jan Seiler and the game was tied at one.

The game would remained tied for just under six minutes when Frances Nesi (Metuchen, NJ/Union Catholic) sent a long pass downfield that Thorndike headed in past Seiler to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. The Hartwick lead proved to be short-lived as with just over 13 minutes left in the half, Marabondo found Juricic for the score and the game would be knotted up at two each going into halftime.

The score remained tied for over 18 minutes of the second half until Gage's goal put the Pioneers ahead for good, 3-2 in the 64th minute. Marabondo would score her second goal of the game 1:16 later and then tacked on her third with under eight minutes remaining to play.

The Pioneers led in shots in the contest 16-10 and held a 9-3 advantage in the second half. William Paterson also led 9-6 in corner kicks and 6-1 in the second period.

Brown stopped five shots in goal for Hartwick. Seiler stopped three for the Lions.
