Hartwick Comes Up Short Versus Stevens, Houghton

HOUGHTON, NYDana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) and Hannah Strom (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) combined for 34 kills and 37 digs but the Hartwick volleyball team fell in a pair of matches at Houghton College on Saturday.

The Hawks dropped a 3-1 (16-25, 17-25, 25-23, 10-25) decision to Stevens in their final Empire 8 match of the season. They finish with a 3-4 mark but still have a chance at qualifying for the conference playoffs.

'Wick lost in three sets, 16-25, 17-25, 15-25 to the host Highlanders in its second match.

Against Stevens, the Hawks fell behind by two games but battled back in the third game to cut the deficit in half. The first-place place Ducks would close it out in the fourth, however, to take the match.

Strom accumulated nine kills and a team-high 14 digs for the Hawks. Martin added nine kills and 11 digs. Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) contributed seven kills, 17 assists, and nine digs. Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) had a team-high 18 assists to go along with five kills.

In the Hawks' second match, Strom recorded nine kills with Martin adding seven. Mary Beth DeCuyke (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) contributed six kills. Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Stations, NY/St. John the Baptist) had a team-best 17 digs. Kinzel added 15 assists and nine digs.

Hartwick (7-16) next plays at home at the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Tournament at Lambros Arena next weekend. The Hawks open on Friday against the City College of New York and SUNY New Paltz.
