Cami Cleaveland (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) scored twice for Hartwick and the women's soccer team halted its three-game winless streak with a 3-0 victory over host Utica on Wednesday night at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Hartwick improves its record to 4-3-3 overall and also notched its first Empire 8 conference victory of the season. The Pioneers, who have now dropped their last four matches, fall to 2-7-2 overall and 0-4 in the E8.
The Hawks dominated the game with a commanding 22-6 advantage in shots. 'Wick also had 13 shots on goal compared to Utica's four.
Cristina Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) had eight of Hartwick's shots and five on goal to lead the team.
Hartwick scored quickly in the first half. Just 5:46 into the period,
Allyson Daniels (Pembroke, NH/Pembroke Academy) picked up the rebound on her own blocked shot and fired into the open net to put the Hawks up 1-0.
Utica had a look at a goal in the 30
th minute. After a corner by the Pioneers' Alyssa Tamburino, Krystine Alvear headed the ball toward the net but Hartwick goalie
Annie Millar (Ilion, NY/Ilion) was right there to deny the opportunity.
Just over a minute and a half later, the Hawks would strike again.
Rachel Mick's (Granby, MA/Granby) shot was denied by Utica goalie Jamie Enders but Cleaveland was there to put back the rebound as Hartwick moved ahead 2-0 going into halftime.
'Wick was firmly in control of the game as Utica could not muster any offense. Hartwick nearly had its third score of the night when
Kylie Thayer (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) hit a deep shot that just missed the crossbar in the 49
th minute. Sicari nearly scored in the 75
th minute when her point blank shot was turned away by Ender.
Hartwick scored its third goal of the game in the 81
st minute to put the game away. Sicari passed down the field to Cleaveland who scored from 10 yards out to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.
The Hawks almost lost the shutout bid with 5:24 left to play when a header shot by Alvear grazed just wide of the goal line. In the end, Hartwick had its fourth shutout of the season and the Pioneers saw their scoreless streak stretch to eight halves.
There was a total of five corner kicks attempted in the game. Utica had a slight edge, 3-2.
Millar got the start in goal for Hartwick and had four saves.
Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) relieved her in the second half and did not record a save. Enders turned away nine shots for Utica.
Hartwick continues road play with an Empire 8 match against Stevens on Saturday. Game time will be at 3 p.m.
