TROY, NY- Cristina Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) scored off an assist from Angela Luizzi (Albany, NY/Guilderland) and the Hartwick defense kept RPI off the scoreboard as the Hawks held on to defeat the host Engineers 1-0 on Tuesday night at East Campus Stadium. The win moves the Hawks to 6-6-3 on the year while RPI drops to 8-6-1.

The Engineers controlled possession in the first 20 minutes of the first half. RPI was able to get off four shots but two went wide, one was blocked, and another was saved by Hartwick goalie Annie Millar (Illion, NY/Ilion).

The Hawks broke through at 21:29. Luizzi won a tackle deep in RPI territory and slipped a ball into the box for Sicari, who right-footed a shot into the left side of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

The Engineers nearly had the immediate answer as Taylor Korytko lofted a cross towards the left side of the penalty area for Giana Abballe. Abballe rolled a shot on goal that was cleared off the line by a Hawks defender.

Rensselaer picked up the pressure in the middle stages of the second half and came close to equalizing on a number of occasions. Brooke Van Baush turned in one of those chances in the 60th minute when she redirected a cross from junior Kerry White just wide of the net.

Seven minutes later, Korytko got on the end of a corner kick by Alex Shaw, hammering a header high and wide of the target. The Engineers were then limited to a pair of long range shots in the final 15 minutes. RPI had seven shots in the second half while 'Wick was held without one.

Hartwick won despite being outshot by the Engineers 17-3 including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. RPI attempted 12 corner kicks and the Hawks none.

Millar made seven saves to preserve the Hartwick win. Steph Vargas came away with two stops for Rensselaer.

After a three game road trip, 'Wick returns home to face St. John Fisher in a key Empire 8 matchup this Saturday. Game time from Elmore Field will be at 2 p.m.
