ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick volleyball took both Plattsburgh and Montclair to the limit Friday night at the Oneonta State Dig Pink Invitational. The Hawks, however, would come up just short in both matches, dropping both in five sets.
In the Hawks' opener against the Cardinals, 'Wick jumped out to a 2-0 lead after taking the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-15. Plattsburgh would respond in the third, 25-16, and evened the match at 2-2 in the fourth, 25-15. In the fifth set, the Cardinals would outlast the Hawks 15-10 to take the victory.
Junior
Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) notched a double-double with 11 kills and a team-best 12 digs for 'Wick. Freshman
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) registered a career-high 39 assists in the match and sophomore
Hannah Strom (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) recorded 12 kills, five aces, and five digs.
Senior
Katie Ryan (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush) contributed nine kills and a team-best three blocks.
Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) had 13 digs and freshman
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) added 12.
In the Hawks' second match, 'Wick dominated the Red Hawks in the opening set as it came out on top by a margin of 25-13. Montclair evened the match in the second, 25-20, and took the lead in the third, 25-18. Hartwick again turned it on in the fourth with a resounding 25-14 win to force the deciding set. The Red Hawks, however, would come away with the 3-2 victory, 15-6 in the fifth set.
Martin had her second straight double-double with team-bests of 11 kills and 13 digs to pace the Hawks. She added six aces. Strom added a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs.
Armstrong dished out 30 assists for a 69-assist night to go along with seven digs.
Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) secured seven kills and Vitale picked up eight digs.
Hartwick (11-20) completes its regular season tomorrow in day two of the Oneonta Invitational. The Hawks play Lasell at 1 p.m. and Bard at 3 p.m.
