ALFRED, NY- The Hartwick women's soccer team scored three times in the first half while holding Alfred to just two shots as the Hawks came away with a 4-0 victory on Saturday evening. The win gives Hartwick an overall record of 8-7-3 and 3-3-1 in the Empire 8. The Saxons finish with an overall record of 5-13 and 0-8 in the E8.
Cristina Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) scored twice to lead the Hawks.
Allyson Daniels (Pembroke, NH/Pembroke Academy) and
Jessica Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus Central) also tallied goals.
Angela Luizzi (Albany, NY/Guilderland) and
Kylie Thayer (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) both totaled two assists each.
Annie Millar (Illion, NY/Illion) had just two saves in goal to register her second shutout of the season.
Sicari got the Hawks on the board just 6:15 into the first half. Later in the 23
rd minute, Sicari would score her second goal of the game off an assist from Thayer. Less than five minutes after that goal, Luizzi connected with Daniels to give Hartwick a 3-0 lead where the score stood at halftime.
'Wick would hold its 3-0 lead for almost 20 minutes of the second half. In the 65
th minute, the Hawks were granted a corner kick which was taken by Thayer. Her kick found Bentley who headed the ball into the net for her first goal of the season and gave Hartwick a 4-0 lead.
The Hawks ended the game with a 12-2 advantage in shots. 'Wick dominated in corner kicks, 9-0.
The win today gives the Hawks their first winning regular season since an 8-6-3 mark in 2002. Hartwick now awaits to see if it will be selected to the ECAC Tournament for the second straight year. Teams will be announced on November 11.
