Hartwick Women's Laxers Slip to New Paltz

ONEONTA, NY- Freshman Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) scored a career-high five goals but it was not enough as visiting New Paltz defeated Hartwick 16-10 on Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. 'Wick falls to 1-3 overall while New Paltz improves to 1-0.

Hartwick led three times in the game and were up 10-8 midway through the second half.  New Paltz rallied to score eight straight times in the final 17:18 of play to come away with the six-goal victory.

Meg Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) scored twice and tallied two assists. Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro), Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran), and Selena Dardia (Freeville, NY) all scored one goal each.

New Paltz was led by Lianne Valdivia's four goals. Talia Tessler, and Carissa Citro both scored three times. Mariam Ismail and Erin Tornatore both had a pair of scores. Fatima Ismail and Kelsey Healey both chipped in one goal.

'Wick scored quickly in the first half on Ference's first goal of the day just 1:44 into the game. New Paltz would even the contest at one each less than five minutes later. Luce's goal gave Hartwick back its lead at 22:25 but four New Paltz goals put the visitors ahead 5-2 at 15:46.

Jweid and Ference's goals got Hartwick to within one score of tying the game. New Paltz answered with two man-up goals to regain its three-goal lead with less than a minute to play in the half. Ference's third goal with 28 seconds remaining narrowed the New Paltz lead to 7-5 where the score stood at halftime.

Tesler opened the second half of play with a goal to put New Paltz ahead 8-5 at 27:47. Hartwick would come storming back with a five-goal outburst spanning almost six minutes of game time and led 10-8 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the game.

New Paltz went off the rest of the way as it pulled out the win. Mariam Ismail, Valdivia, and Tornatore all scored a pair of goals each during the 8-0 run.

Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) had nine saves in goal for Hartwick. New Paltz's Jackie Ulanoff stopped 10 shots.

While New Paltz led Hartwick in shots 30-27, 'Wick held an 18-17 lead in ground balls and a 14-13 lead in draw controls.

Hartwick returns to action on March 20 when it travels to Cazenovia to face the Wildcats. Game time will be at 4 p.m.
