ONEONTA, NY- A day after their home opener was pushed back due to inclement weather, the Hartwick women's soccer team finally got its 2013 season underway on Sunday afternoon at Elmore Field. Despite surrendering a goal to Marywood in the first half, the Hawks tied the game in the second frame and eventually settled for a 1-1 draw with the visiting Pacers at the Erinn K. Brozman Cup.
The Hawks had a chance to take the early lead in the 28
th minute.
Cristina Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) dribbled down the left side of the field and hit a cross that slid in front of the goal but could not connect with a teammate.
The Pacers would strike first when Alexandra Fiore hit a floating shot near the top of the box that sailed over the outstretched arms of Hartwick goalie
Annie Millar (Ilion, NY/Ilion) and into the net to put Marywood ahead 1-0. The Pacers nearly took a 2-0 lead in the 40
th minute but Kimberly Vogan's shot bounced off the post and out of play.
Early in the second half, Sicari again had an opportunity to get Hartwick on the scoreboard when she got past a diving Victoria Pezdirtz and nailed a cross pass that was just over the head of
Cami Cleaveland (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta). 'Wick would finally score in the 60
th minute when Sicari's shot bounced off Pezdirtz and to Cleaveland who put the rebound in to tie the game up at 1-1.
In the first overtime period, Sicari almost scored the game-winner as she sliced through the Marywood defense, but her shot went high over the crossbar. The Pacers nearly won the game themselves less than a minute into the second overtime when Angela Heydt hit a long shot that Millar punched up into the air for a huge save to help preserve the tie.
Millar, starting in her first game in a Hartwick uniform, saved five shots for the Hawks. Pezdirtz had four saves for Marywood.
Hartwick led in total shots 11-10 but Marywood got six of those on goal compared to five for 'Wick. The Hawks had five corner kicks to the Pacers' three.
The Hawks will now prepare for the annual Mayor's Cup next weekend. Hartwick will host John Carroll University at Elmore Field at 3:30 p.m. in the second of two games on the afternoon. Oneonta State and RIT will play at 1 p.m.
