ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick women's soccer earned its first point in conference play on Wednesday night with a 2-2 tie against the visiting Elmira College Soaring Eagles in a match played at Elmore Field. The Hawks were less than two minutes away from winning the match but an Emily Kelly tally with 1:45 left in regulation forced overtime.
In the extra sessions, the Hawks dominated with an 8-0 advantage in shots but couldn't find the game-winner.
Angela Luizzi (Albany, NY/Guilderland) and
Allyson Daniels (Pembroke, NH/Pembroke Academy) registered the Hartwick goals.
Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburn-Earlville) made two saves and also had three shots in the overtime periods, all coming by way of Hartwick free kicks.
After a scoreless first half of play, Luizzi would open the scoring 1:35 into the second half. Following a corner kick from
Kylie Thayer (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), the ball popped out to the top of the box on the right side. Luizzi trapped the ball with her chest and rifled the ball to the far post past Soaring Eagle keeper Amanda Banner for 1-0 Hartwick lead.
The Hartwick advantage lasted for just over 10 minutes when Mollie Hamilton found the net for EC. Kelly won a ball in the midfield and played a ball through to Hamilton. She took a touch past Brown, who had charged off her line, and tucked the ball into an open net to even the score.
In the 74
th minute, the Hawks regained the lead.
Cristina Sicari (St. James, NY/Smithtown East) did much of the work as she beat a defender and got the ball deep on the right wing. She served the ball across and Daniels got to it first finishing to the near post for the 2-1 edge.
'Wick kept the Purple and Gold out for the next 14 minutes, limiting their chances on goal. It appeared the Hawks were destined for the victory as the clock dropped below two minutes, but Janine Swanson played a long through ball for Kelly who won it and hit a shot from just inside the 18 past Brown to knot the score at 2-all.
Sicari had a pair of shots in the first overtime with the first forcing a tough save from Banner. Brown also had two shots on target on direct kicks inside the midfield line. A Brown free kick in the first two minutes of the second overtime came close to ending the match. She hit a high service at goal and Banner took too many steps off her line and had to make a leaping save over her head to keep the game level.
'Wick would fire three more shots at the Elmira goal in the final five minutes of overtime with two of the efforts being on target. Neither, however, beat Banner and the game ended in the 2-2 draw.
The hosts outshot the visitors by a 16-9 margin. EC would have a 9-8 advantage after regulation. The Hawks had an 8-5 edge in corners for the match. Banner would close the game with 11 saves for the Purple and Gold.
The Hawks are now 3-2-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the Empire 8. The Soaring Eagles are 3-3-1 and 1-0-1 in the conference.
Hartwick hosts Nazareth College on Saturday, September 28 in their next match. Kickoff between the Hawks and Golden Flyers is 2 p.m.
