ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick held the lead on visiting Nazareth for over 56 minutes on Saturday, but second-half goals from Olivia Derleth and Elisa Marchione would push the Golden Flyers past the Hawks, 2-1, on Elmore Field. The Hawks drop to 3-3-3 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play. Nazareth ups its overall mark to 5-2-2 and 2-0 in the E8.
Hartwick jumped out to an early lead as defender
Mary Morrison (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) registered her first career goal after just 4:12. The Hawks won a corner kick which was served into the Naz box by
Kylie Thayer (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca). The ball bounced around inside the six-yard box where Morrison got her head on it, tucking the ball into the far corner for the 1-0 Hartwick advantage. The goal marked the Hawks' first against Nazareth since 2004.
The Hawks' defense held the Golden Flyers to very few chances for much of the remaining first half. Roughly five minutes before halftime, Ashtin Argentieri delivered a pass to Katie Trainor who had a good look at goal. Trainor's shot, however, sailed wide of the 'Wick net.
Just a minute and a half later, Danielle Wilkin had a chance for the Flyers. Inside the box, she cut the ball back to beat a defender, and fired a left-footed shot to the far post, but her effort went just wide and the game remained 1-0 Hartwick heading into halftime.
The Hawks kept the visitors off the scoreboard for over 15 minutes in the second half until a Golden Flyer corner forced the equalizer. Julia Teran Pulford served a ball inside the Hartwick six-yard box. Olivia Derleth, Naz's leading scorer, was right on the goal line to knock the ball in and tie the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied for close to 25 minutes with much of the action occurring in the middle of the field. Nazareth had an opportunity with five and a half minutes left. Marchione drilled a low shot at Brown from just inside the Hartwick 18. Brown made the difficult diving save but couldn't hang on to the ball. Michaela Soules was there to pounce on the rebound but she sent her shot wide of goal.
The Golden Flyers secured the game-winning goal with 3:36 to go. Trainor sent a long through ball to Marchione who walked in alone with Brown. She kept her composure, and slotted past the 'Wick keeper low to the far post to give her side its first lead of the day after over 86 minutes.
The Hawks had one final chance with just over two minutes left. Thayer took a free kick 45 yards from the Naz goal, putting her service into the box. Morrison was a half-step late and got a piece of the ball but her header went wide.
Nazareth would end the match with a 14-4 edge in shots. The Flyers would take six corners to Hartwick's 3. Brown would finish with six saves for 'Wick. Bethany Novak did not make a save in 90 minutes for Naz.
After eight home matches in their first nine games of the season, the Hawks will hit the road for two straight conference contests. 'Wick plays at Utica on Wednesday, October 2. They travel to Hoboken for a match with Stevens on Saturday, October 5.
