Volleyball Battles for First Win at Golden Flyer Invitational

Mary Beth DeCuyke had eight kills, three digs, three blocks, and two aces for the Hawks against Hilbert Saturday.

ROCHESTER, NY – Hartwick fought back from a two games to one deficit to Hilbert in its final match of the Nazareth College Golden Flyer Invitational to claim its first win of the season, 3-2. Hartwick (1-7) rallied for a 25-20 triumph in game number four and outlasted Hilbert 15-9 in game five for the victory.

The Hawks grabbed an early lead after besting Hilbert 25-17 in the first game of the match. Hilbert came back with two straight games, 25-23 and 25-18, before 'Wick mounted the comeback.

Junior Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) was the lone Hawk to earn double digits in kills. She finished the match with 14. Mary Beth DeCuyke (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) chipped in with eight. Christine Confer (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT) each contributed six kills and Ashlynn Mohan (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) added five. Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) distributed 28 assists in the match.

As a group, the Hawks registered 19 service aces with Martin and Mohan picking up six apiece. Defensively, Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) recorded a match-high 19 digs. Armstrong earned 14 digs, Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) had 13, and Mohan added 10. Vonasek contributed a match-high four blocks.

Chelsea Reischuck led Hilbert with 15 kills with Jordan Botsford securing 13. Shannon Memminger delivered 43 assists.

In the Hawks' first match of the day, Fredonia State won in three games, 25-17, 25-13, 25-19. Martin had nine kills and hit .304 for the match. Armstrong had seven digs.

The Blue Devils' balanced attack was led by Paulina Rein's nine kills. Kelly Edinger dished out 38 assists.

'Wick looks to ride the momentum of tonight's victory into their home opener on Tuesday night against Cazenovia. The Hawks and Wildcats get their match started at Lambros Arena at 7 p.m.
