Women’s Soccer Suffers First Loss of Season to #23 RIT 2-0 at Mayor’s Cup

ONEONTA, NY- The #23 Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers women's soccer team scored once in the first and second halves and limited Hartwick to just four shots as the Tigers defeated the Hawks 2-0 on Sunday afternoon on the final day of completion of the 2013 Mayor's Cup. The match was played on SUNY Oneonta's Red Dragon Field.

The Tigers held the Hawks without a shot in the first half. RIT got on the board 8:42 into the game when Shelby Vakiener hit a cross from the left side of the box to Elizabeth May who headed the ball into the goal to give RIT the early 1-0 lead.

RIT scored its second goal of the day in the 77th minute. Kiana Richards hit a shot from 25 yards out that floated over Hartwick goalie Hope Brown's (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) head and into the net to make it a 2-0 game.

Brown finished the match with seven saves. RIT's Amanda Murray had two saves.

The Tigers led in overall shots 14-4 and had a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams had seven corner kicks.

Kylie Thayer (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) and Jessica Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus) were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

Oneonta State won the Mayor's Cup with their 5-1 victory earlier in the day over John Carroll University. It is the Red Dragons first Cup since 2007.

The Hawks return to Elmore Field to host SUNY Cobleskill at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.  The game was rescheduled from August 31 which was wiped out because of inclement weather.
