Seniors Lead the Way for Hartwick Swimming and Diving against St. Lawrence

Seniors Ryan Cichielo and Lindsay Bierwert both posted wins on the afternoon against St. Lawrence.
ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the final home meet of the season on Saturday afternoon at Moyer Pool. Both squads came out with victories as the men won 130-82 while the women prevailed 128-101 over St. Lawrence.

The meet also served as a senior recognition and parent appreciation day. A total of 11 senior athletes were honored prior to the beginning of the day's first event.

For the men, a pair of swimmers took first place to lead the Hawks. Luke Grunewald (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Acad.) won by a wide margin in the 1650 free (16:31.33) and in the process set a new pool record. He also claimed victory in the 500 free (4:47.86) and missed the pool record by two seconds. Matt Plunkett (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Cooper City) was a winner in the 200 free (1:49.72) and the 100 back (55.38).

Zac Whitenack (Watertown, NY/General Brown) won his first collegiate event as he came in first in the 50 free (22.07). He was followed by Joey Mulvehill (Penfield, NY/Penfield) (22.31), and Evan DeGidio (Jacksonville, FL/Episcopal School) (22.40). Other winners on the afternoon included Luis Santiesteban (Key Largo, FL) in the 200 (2:02.64), Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Hanahan) in the 100 fly (54.85), Brad Ranson (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) in the 100 free (47.62) and Ryan Cichielo (Cape Coral, FL/Cape Coral) in the 100 breast (1:02.89).

Both relay teams came away with wins. The 200 medley relay squad of Plunkett, Cichielo, Ranson, and DeGidio placed first with a time of 1:38.38. The 200 relay quartet of Whitenack, Mulvehill, Santiesteban, and Ranson posted a winning time of 1:27.41.

Imma Rutigliano (Tillson, NY/John A. Coleman) touched the wall first in two events to lead the women's team. Rutigliano had victories in the 200 IM (2:19.40) and the 100 back (1:04.48).

Gwen Mathias (Sunland, CA/Southwestern Academy) came in first place in the 1650 free (18:24.27). Other winners for the women were Rachel Bellis (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Acad.) in the 200 free (2:03.54), Lindsay Bierwert (Leeds, MA/Northampton) in the 100 fly (1:02.42), Kaitlyn Campbell (Hanover Park, IL/Glenhard North) in the 500 free (5:22.79) and Clare Nelson (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) in the 100 breast (1:11.10).

Much like the men's relays, the women took first in both relay events. The 200 medley relay team of Rutigliano, Nelson, Bierwert, and Kelsey Elliot (Cortland, NY/Homer) had a winning time of 1:55.65. The 200 free relay squad of Breann Jefferds (Watertown, NY/Watertown), Campbell, Helen Merkley (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland), and Bellis swam a time of 1:46.79 to claim victory.

Diver Lindsay Bowker (Bothell, WA/Inglemoor) easily took both diving events. She posted scores of 219.45 and 251.90, respectively, in the one and three-meter diving competitions. Bowker will compete at the Ithaca Diving Invitational tomorrow morning.

Both teams will conclude the regular season next Saturday against Stevens. Meet time will be at 1 p.m.
