Oneonta Rallies for 3-1 Win Over ’Wick Field Hockey

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick scored the opening goal 169 seconds in and held off SUNY Oneonta (10-6) for nearly 34 minutes, but the Red Dragons scored three times in the second half to come away with a 3-1 victory in a non-conference field hockey match Thursday at Wright Stadium.

Hannah Hayward scored the Red Dragons' first two goals. Leading scorer Andrea Day also tallied.

The Hawks jumped in front following the first penalty corner of the game two and a half minutes from the opening whistle. Following the corner from Mikaelan Stuligross (Walton, NY/Walton), Maxine Dunn (Peterborough, NH/ConVal) centered a ball from the right side to Mckenzie Bond (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Post) who deflected the ball past Oneonta goalie Tess Tracy for a 1-0 Hawks' advantage. The goal was Bond's sixth of the season.

Oneonta would hold a 13-4 edge in shots for the rest of the half but Hartwick goalie Yanna Boggio (Amherst, NY/Amherst) kept the Red Dragons out with eight saves in the first 35 minutes. Lex Richards (Northport, NY/Northport) and Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) each had shots on target for Hartwick but they were stopped by Tracy.

After halftime, Oneonta needed only 1:44 to even the contest. A penalty corner from Andrea Day was played to Sierra Earle. She delivered a pass to Hayward who was on Boggio's right. Hayward's shot from 10 yards away went through the Hartwick keeper's legs and in and the game was even.

Hartwick nearly retook the lead almost seven minutes later. Following a corner, Claudia Stone (Akron, NY/Akron) served the ball in from the top of the circle. It was tipped by Bond and fell right to Stuligross on the doorstep. Her shot beat Oneonta backup keeper Krista Servedio but defender Holly VanDresar, who was on her knees on the goal line, got her stick down and cleared it out to keep the game level.

Hayward put Oneonta ahead at 52:32 after she intercepted a ball 30 yards away from Hartwick's goal. She weaved through a few defenders and fired a high shot to the far corner for her fourth goal of the season.

Nine minutes, four seconds later, Oneonta got an insurance goal at 61:36. After receiving a pass from Bailee Barrett, Day dribbled into the circle and went one-on-one with Boggio. She moved around her and tucked the ball into the Hawks' empty net to close out the day's scoring.

Boggio ended the game with 13 saves for Hartwick. Tracy made two stops in the opening half and Servedio picked up the win in goal after playing the final 35 minutes.

Hartwick (4-11) hosts Nazareth in an Empire 8 Conference game on Saturday, October 25.
