ONEONTA, NY – The showdown between Hartwick and St. John Fisher's field hockey teams on Saturday was a one-goal game with just over two minutes to play in regulation before the visiting Cardinals tacked on an insurance goal to put the match out of reach.
In the first half, the Cardinals broke the ice with a goal at 25:43. Emily Markarian was able to dribble past a trio of Hartwick defenders and beat
Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) low to her near side for a 1-0 Fisher edge.
The Hawks generated a corner in the late stages of the first half.
Emily Marcotte (Corinth, NY/Corinth) took it, getting the ball to
Catie Kondi (Canaan, NH/Mascoma Valley Regional) at the top of the circle. Her shot was saved by Fisher goalie Danielle Famolaro and the rebound popped back to Marcotte. Her effort was deflected out by Cardinal defender Alexandrea Malley to keep the game 1-0.
In the second half, the Hawks created more corners than the Cardinals, 6-4, but only generated one shot from
Claudia Stone (Akron, NY/Akron) which was stopped by Famolaro.
With the Hawks pressing for the tying goal, St. John Fisher would get the insurance marker it needed with just 2:01 left. Lauren Fazio got the tally as she received the ball, turned in front of the 'Wick goal and scored far-post.
Fisher held a 17-3 edge in shots in the contest. The Cardinals had more penalty corners by a slim margin of 8-7.
Carter came away with nine saves in cage for 'Wick. Famolaro made two saves for Fisher.
The loss drops the Hawks season mark to 4-7 overall. They are now 1-4 in the Empire 8 Conference. Fisher improves to 8-3 and 5-0.
Hartwick remains on the road for its next three matches. The Hawks visit Washington & Jefferson first on Saturday, October 17.
