ONEONTA, NY – Nazareth scored both of its goals in a 6:38 span late in the first half and early in the second to earn a 2-0 victory over Hartwick in Empire 8 women's soccer Saturday on Elmore Field.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 8-3-2 overall and 2-2-2 in league play. The Golden Flyers, who are ranked sixth in the latest NSCAA East Region rankings, improve to 10-2-2 and 4-1-1.
The game was scoreless until the 41
st minute of the match when Dana Donnelly broke the tie for the Flyers. She settled a ball and placed her shot to the top right corner of the goal past Hartwick keeper
Megan McGillycuddy (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) for a 1-0 lead.
One hundred seconds into the second half, Nazareth got an insurance marker. Brianna Vibbard got behind the Hawks' defense and dribbled in alone with McGillycuddy and scored with a chip shot to close out the game's scoring. The Flyers' second tally would mark the only time in 13 games this season a team has managed to score twice on the Hawks.
The Golden Flyers out-shot the Hawks in the match by a narrow 7-5 margin.
Sophomore
Casey Boucher (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) registered two shots for Hartwick, including the team's lone shot on goal. Junior
Cami Cleaveland (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) also had two shots for 'Wick and freshman
Madison Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) recorded one. McGillycuddy would make two saves in goal for the Hawks.
Hartwick still has two games left on its Empire 8 Conference schedule against Elmira and Stevens. The Hawks are looking for their first conference playoff appearance since 2002.
