SCHENECTADY, NY – Hartwick field hockey twice fought back from deficits, including one with under four minutes to go, in a 4-3 double overtime victory at Union College on Tuesday night.
Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) netted the game-winner with 6:15 remaining in the second extra session to seal the comeback victory.
The Hawks trailed 2-0 in the opening 18 minutes on a pair of goals from Lauren Pacheco. The Hawks answered with 2:15 left in the half to trim the deficit to one as
Emily Marcotte (Corinth, NY/Corinth) scored on a rebound from in close.
The game remained 2-1 until 10:47 remained in regulation.
Mikaelan Stuligross (Walton, NY/Walton) scored for the third straight game on a tip-in from
Catie Kondi (Canaan, NH/Mascoma Valley Regional) to tie up the match.
The outlook was bleak for the Hawks as they surrendered a late Union goal with just 3:53 left. Pacheco got her third goal of the game with Hannah Madden assisting. But 'Wick refused to lose and tied the game back up again just 44 seconds later. A Kondi corner went to
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls), who scored through traffic, and the game was tied at 3-3.
The Hawks dominated in the overtime periods, out-shooting the Dutchwomen by a margin of 13-4. Union goalkeeper Laura Aptowitz made several sprawling saves to rob the Hawks and keep the game even. Finally at the 93:45 mark, Ryan put home her seventh of the season on a backhand for the clincher.
The Hawks are now winners of two straight games and up their overall season mark to 4-6. They are 2-0 in overtime games this season. Union falls to 5-5 on the year.
Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week
Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) finished the contest with 10 saves for the Hawks. Aptowitz made 13 saves.
The Dutchwomen held a 24-20 edge in shots for the game, including a 20-7 advantage through regulation. They held a slim edge in penalty corners, 10-9.
Hartwick gets back to Empire 8 play on Saturday at home. The Hawks host St. John Fisher at 11 a.m. The program also celebrates 50 years of Hartwick field hockey later that evening.
