ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick's men's lacrosse team won for the second time in four days on Saturday with a 14-9 win over the Elmira College Soaring Eagles in a game played at Campus Field. The victory is the Hawks' first in the Empire 8 Conference this season.
Evan Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North),
David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional), and
Conner Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) each scored three times to lead Hartwick.
Matt McCallan (Bay Shore, NY/West Islip) contributed two goals and an assist.
Elmira would take an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter of play only to have the Hawks double them up in scoring the rest of the way, 14-7. Fifty-one seconds after EC's second goal, Bianculli tallied from
Dylan Malloy (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) to get the Hawks on the scoreboard.
Jacob Sasche (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) tied it at 8:32 and Long tallied off an
Adam Goss (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) feed 49 seconds later for a 3-2 Hartwick edge. The Soaring Eagles evened the score at 3-3 with 4:24 remaining in the period.
Fifty-seven seconds into the second quarter, EC jumped in front again, 4-3. It would be their final lead of the day as the Hawks would score the last three goals of the half for a 6-4 advantage. Petillo scored from McCallan followed by goals from Long and Goss with
Sean Brown (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) assisting on both.
The two teams traded goals throughout the third quarter with Elmira only getting as close as two. Petillo scored twice, including the final goal of the quarter with one second left for 'Wick. McCallan and Long also found the net for the Hawks.
Hartwick broke the game open in the fourth period as it scored four consecutive goals to pull away. Simmons got things going with a goal at 14:04. He then set up Bianculli for Hartwick's twelfth goal of the game. McCallan added an unassisted tally and Bianculli scored off a Brown pass for the Hawks' final goal and a 14-7 lead. EC tacked on two goals with under a minute left to get a little closer.
The Hawks registered 44 shots in the game to the Soaring Eagles' 27. They also had more ground balls (42-37) and won 16-of-26 face-offs.
Kyle Kickel (West Islip, NY/West Islip) had the game-high in ground balls for the second straight game with eight.
Connor Hudson (Moriches, NY/William Floyd), who won 15 times inside the face-off circle, added seven ground balls.
Kevin Wahl (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) had six ground balls,
Kevin Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) added five, and McCallan notched four.

Mike Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) made 10 saves in the Hartwick cage.
Elmira was led by T.J. Leach and Skyler Pradelski who each scored three goals. Wyatt Katsos stopped 16 Hartwick shots in the EC goal.
Hartwick (2-7, 1-4 E8) next plays on Wednesday at home against Houghton College. Play begins at 4 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
