PITTSFORD, NY – Hartwick trailed St. John Fisher by just a 6-3 margin at halftime, but the Hawks were outscored by the host Cardinals 13-1 in the second half in a 19-4 loss in Empire 8 women's lacrosse on Sunday at Growney Stadium in Pittsford, NY. The loss snaps the Hawks' two-game winning streak. They fall to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in league play. Fisher is now 8-4, and 4-1.
Four different players figured into the scoring for Hartwick.
Ally Naja (Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) and
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) led the Hawks with a goal and an assist each.
Hartwick fell behind 4-0 with under seven minutes elapsed in the game. However, the Hawks would outscore the Cardinals 3-2 over the final 21 minutes of the half. Rosenberg scored on a free-position shot to get the Hawks on the scoreboard. After two more Cardinal tallies, Naja scored from Rosenberg with 5:41 left and
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) added an unassisted goal at 3:23 to make it 6-3. 'Wick had a chance to inch even closer but a
Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) free-position shot was turned away by Fisher goalie Molly Maguire.
Fisher would hold an 18-7 edge in shots in the half. Hartwick goalkeeper
Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) would stop nine shots in the period.
The Cardinals would find the back of the net three times in the first two minutes of the second half.
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) answered for the Hawks 56 seconds later with Naja picking up the assist. It would, however, be the Hawks' final goal of the day. Fisher would get the last 10 goals of the contest in the victory.
Luce would finish with nine saves. She also grabbed a game-high five ground balls.
Carla Centanni (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) played the final six minutes in cage for 'Wick. Naja added four ground balls and Ference and
Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) each contributed three. Littleton also had the game-high in draw controls with five.
Mattie Coffey (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) registered a game-high three caused turnovers.
Ten different Cardinals notched at least one goal, led by Samantha Barton, Chrissy Cooko, and Cori Holbrook's tallies each.
Hartwick is off for the next six days. The Hawks host Nazareth at Wright Stadium on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
