ONEONTA, NY – Visiting Nazareth defeated Hartwick's women's lacrosse team by a final score of 19-8 on Saturday at Wright Stadium. The Golden Flyers jumped out to a 7-1 lead at the midway point of the first half and led by at least seven in the second half in the victory.
Senior
Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) paced the Hartwick attack with four goals and an assist.
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) added two goals and an assist for the Hawks.
Nazareth broke the ice 6:38 into the game on a goal from Kate Rothrock. The Golden Flyers added another before Jweid netted an unassisted goal to trim the margin to 2-1.
Naz would take command with five goals in a 5:07 span for a 7-1 advantage. Jweid scored her 20
th goal of the season later in the period before Naz added one more score for an 8-2 lead at halftime.
The Golden Flyers scored three times in a 51-second spurt to begin the second half. Hartwick answered with a pair of tallies from
Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) and Rosenberg 36 seconds apart to make it an 11-4 game. Jweid assisted on Rosenberg's tally.
Rosenberg and
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) scored for the Hawks later in the half before the Flyers scored three consecutive goals to open up a 17-6 lead. The two teams traded a pair of goals in the final 7:40. Jweid secured both Hawk goals with Rosenberg assisting on her second.
Nazareth held the edge in shots by a final count of 36-24. The Golden Flyers also grabbed 21 ground balls to the Hawks' 17.
Melissa Gifford (Penacook, NH/Merrimack Valley) registered a team-high three ground balls in the contest. Coons,
Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown),
Caroline Stanford (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles), and
Mel Niewender (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park Mem.) each contributed two ground balls.
Stanford and Coons each caused two turnovers. Jweid had the team-high in draws with three.
Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) made seven saves in the opening 49 minutes in goal for the Hawks.
April Hargy (Edgartown, MA/Martha's Vineyard) played the final 11 minutes and made one stop.
Rothrock paced Naz with nine points in the game on three goals and six assists. Carly Gates added four goals and Haley DeVona and Brooke Sullivan each had three goals and three assists. Ashley Kirch made 10 saves in the Naz goal.
In a ceremony prior to the match, the five Hartwick seniors – Hargy, Jweid, Littleton, Luce, and Stanford - were recognized for their contributions to the program.
Hartwick (4-8, 2-5 E8) next plays on Thursday, April 23 at home against Misericordia.
