ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick's men's lax team cruised to its first win of the season with a 12-4 victory over SUNY Cobleskill at Wright Stadium on Wednesday. Eight Hawks figured into the scoring.
The Hawks out-shot the Fighting Tigers by a wide margin, 52-19, in the match. They also won the ground ball battle 47-29 and caused a season-high 15 turnovers.
Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) registered four goals for the Hawks with
Matt McCallan (Bay Shore, NY/West Islip) adding a pair of goals and an assist.
Dylan Malloy (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) and
David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) each contributed two goals and
Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) chipped in with a goal and three assists.
The Hawks got off to a quick start scoring a pair of goals in the opening 1:35. McCallan got the game's first goal after 53 seconds and Petillo netted his first at 13:25 for a 2-0 Hartwick lead.
Petillo added his second goal off a Simmons' feed for a 3-0 edge before the Fighting Tigers got on the scoreboard with 7:18 remaining in the first quarter. Petillo and Simmons hooked up again on the man-advantage and the Hawks took a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.
Conner Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) rang a shot in off the post 2:08 into the second period for a four-goal lead.
Sean Brown (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) earned the assist on the play. Cobleskill got within three after a goal with under 10 minutes to go in the half, but Simmons tallied off a
Jacob Sasche (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) helper at 8:04 and Malloy added Hartwick's seventh goal from McCallan for a 7-2 edge at the break.
The Fighting Tigers opened the scoring in the second half but the Hawks recorded three straight goals in the third for a 10-3 advantage. Petillo scored his team-leading thirteenth of the season and Bianculli netted back-to-back goals late in the period. Long and Simmons dished out assists on both of Bianculli's scores.
McCallan found the net for his second goal of the day 1:32 into the fourth. Cobleskill got its final goal of the game at 10:44 and Malloy closed out the scoring with 43 ticks to play.
David Meyers led the Fighting Tigers with a pair of goals and an assist. Anthony Yevoli and Troy Rossi also tallied.
Mike Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) and
Sam Nowak (Lockport, NY/Lockport) combined for six saves in the Hawks' cage. Nicholas Goldberg made 16 stops for the Fighting Tigers.
Kyle Kickel (West Islip, NY/West Islip) earned a game-high six ground balls in the contest for the Hawks. McCallan and Hudson each contributed five ground balls. Hudson also won 11 face-offs.
Petillo, Bianculli, Brown,
Tanner Patterson (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow), and
James Vogt (Stratham, NH/Exeter) all had three ground balls.
Matt Bytner (Albany, NY/South Colonie) registered the game-high in caused turnovers with three.
Hartwick gets back to Empire 8 play on Saturday, April 11 at Elmira. The Hawks and Soaring Eagles square off at 1 p.m.
