ROCHESTER, NY – Hartwick volleyball fell to 2-7 overall on Saturday with a pair of losses to Vassar and RIT at the Nazareth College Golden Flyer Invitational. The Hawks lost in three sets to Vassar, 17-25, 16-25, 15-25, and in three to RIT, 20-25, 17-25, 19-25.
In set one of their first match, the Hawks scored four straight points to surge ahead of the Brewers 15-11. Vassar would answer with a big 14-2 run to secure the set.
The second set was tight until the midway point, when the Brewers opened up a 16-10 advantage. The Hawks trimmed the gap to four, 21-17, following a
Kayla Baril (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) kill, but Vassar would notch the final three points to go up two sets to none.
In the third, Hartwick fell behind early and couldn't catch up as Vassar closed out the match in three sets.
Baril's six kills led Hartwick.
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) contributed a double-double with a team-high 13 assists and a match-high 11 digs.
Rachel Griffing (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) added eight digs in the match.
In the second match's first set, the Hawks hung with the Tigers in the early proceedings. RIT built a 17-12 edge and maintained at least a four-point lead the rest of the way to take the set.
RIT led for virtually all of the second set. The Tigers built leads of as many as eight in a 25-17 win. The third set was closely contested with the Hawks' earning leads six times with the score being tied an additional 12 times. A kill from
Rachel Jones (West Charlton, NY/Galway) squared the score at 19-19, but the Tigers grabbed the final six points to put the match away.
Baril finished with a team-high seven kills to go along with seven digs.
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Chardon) registered a match-high 15 digs with
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) recording nine.
The Hartwick Hawks return home for a Tuesday night match at Lambros Arena. The Hawks host SUNY Polytechnic Institute at 7 p.m.
