ONEONTA, NY – Last season, Hartwick's women's soccer team made a habit out of scoring goals from set pieces. The trend continued this evening as freshman back
Madison Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) scored a pair of goals off of restarts and the Hawks claimed a 3-0 win over Johnson & Wales University Sunday on Elmore Field.
The victory clinches the Hawks' second straight Erinn K. Brozman Memorial Cup and third in the last four seasons. The Hawks also earned their fifth consecutive shutout to begin the season, which is a program record. They also begin the season 5-0 for the first time since 1988.
Miller scored both of her goals off of corner kicks from teammate
Sierra Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus). She now has three goals in the last two games.
Miller opened the scoring just 58 seconds into the match. The Hawks won a corner and Bentley swung a left-footed service into the box. Miller hammered past JWU goalkeeper Alex Place from eight yards away and the Hawks were in front.
Hartwick had to wait nearly 62 minutes to get an insurance marker. Again, Bentley served her corner in to Miller just inside the penalty spot. Her header beat Place to the far post for a 2-0 advantage.
Less than seven minutes after Miller's second tally, the Hawks were at it again. A cross from
Ashley Connolly (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) found
Allie Ricci (Millstone, NJ/Saint John Vianney) on the right side. She played a ball across the box to
Taylor Lockwood (Schenectady, NY/The Albany Academies) who buried a near-post shot to close out the day's scoring.
Hartwick capped the day with a 9-6 edge in shots. They also took all eight of the day's corner kicks.
Megan McGillycuddy (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and
Kristen Altieri (Babylon, NY/Babylon) combined on the shutout. McGillycuddy made one save in the opening 85 minutes. Altieri played the final five minutes.
Hartwick plays next at Keuka College on Wednesday, September 16. Kickoff between the Hawks and Wolfpack is 7 p.m.
