ONEONTA, NY –
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) registered a match-high 15 kills and added nine digs to pace Hartwick to a straight-sets victory over SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday night. The Hawks won by scores of 27-25, 25-12, and 25-22.
The win for Hartwick is its second straight. The Hawks improve their record to 4-11 overall.
In the opening set, the Hawks led by as many as seven, 22-15, before the Fighting Tigers stormed back with six straight points to pull within one.
After a 'Wick timeout, Cobleskill took the lead, 24-23, after registering three of the next four points. Hartwick evened the score at 25-25 and an Armstrong kill followed by an
Ashley Smatko (Fort Edward, NY/South Glens Falls) ace earned the Hawks the first set, 27-25.
The Hawks cruised in the second set. After a 'Wick service error made the score 11-8, a Smatko kill triggered a 13-4 run to close out the set for a 2-0 advantage.
Cobleskill trailed for much of the third set, but the Tigers trimmed their deficit to just one, 23-22. Kills from
Nicole Wyse (Manchester, CT/South Windsor) and Armstrong put the match away for the Hawks, 25-22.
Armstrong added four assisted blocks and three service aces to go along with her 15 kills and nine digs.
Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) and Wyse each had six kills for 'Wick and Smatko contributed five. Smtako would also serve up a match-high four aces and she accumulated 10 digs.
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) recorded 12 digs and
Ashley Werner (Saugeeties, NY/Saugerties) dished out 21 assists.
Hartwick hosts Nazareth and Elmira this weekend to begin Empire 8 Conference play. The Hawks play the Golden Flyers at 11 a.m. followed by the Soaring Eagles at 4 p.m.
