Second-Half Tallies Sink Field Hockey in 3-1 Loss to Elmira

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick out-shot visiting Elmira 28-15 in the game and the two teams were tied at halftime 1-1, but a pair of Soaring Eagle goals in the second half would be the difference in a 3-1 'Wick defeat Saturday at Wright Stadium.

Elmira struck first after 10:18 as Kristy Haskell scored her second goal of the season to put the visitors in front. The Hawks had a chance to answer less than five minutes after Elmira took the lead after earning a penalty stroke. Lex Richards (Northport, NY/Northport) couldn't convert on the shot, however and the game remained 1-0.

The Hawks managed to answer 12 and a half minutes after EC's goal as Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) beat EC's Julie Hockenberger for her second tally of the season.

In the second half, the Hawks limited the Soaring Eagles to only seven shots, but they scored on two of them early in the period. Julie Derco gave Elmira the edge with a looping shot over Hartwick goalkeeper Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) following a penalty corner. Alli Gilbert added to the Elmira total just over five minutes later with her second goal of the season.

The Hawks would out-shoot the Soaring Eagles 13-2 the rest of the way but couldn't produce another goal. 'Wick earned a second penalty stroke  with six and a half minutes left with an opportunity to cut the EC lead in half. Rebecca Reilly's (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) shot was turned away by Hockenberger in what would prove to be the Hawks' final shot.

With the loss, the Hawks slip to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the Empire 8 Conference. Elmira improves to 2-6 and 1-2.

Carter made four saves for Hartwick on the day. Hockenberger was credited with 16 stops.

Hartwick next plays on Wednesday, September 30 at home against Vassar College. Game time is 4 p.m.
