ONEONTA, NY – A
Mikaelan Stuligross (Walton, NY/Walton) goal tied the score for the Hartwick for the second time with 8:20 gone in the second half, but visiting Vassar answered 1:20 later to take the lead for good in a 4-2 victory on Wednesday at Wright Stadium.
Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) registered a goal and an assist in the game for Hartwick.
Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) made 15 saves in goal for the Hawks.
The Brewers scored with just under 26 minutes elapsed in the opening half. Hayley Beach found Lauren Wiebe who fired past Carter for the 1-0 edge.
The Hawks answered right back 5:12 later.
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) deflected a pass to Ryan who drove with the ball to Vassar goalie Paige Amico's left. From just inside the circle, she unleashed a far-post blast into the corner of the goal for her team-leading fifth tally of the season.
Seven minutes, 28 seconds into the second half, Vassar regained the advantage. Megan Caveny jumped on a loose ball just to the left of Carter and placed her shot into the net for the Brewers' second goal.
The opportunistic Hawks came right back and capitalized on their only penalty corner of the half 52 seconds later. Stuligross took the corner and following a short pass from Ryan, put the ball home for the equalizer, 2-2.
Beach came back for Vassar at the other end, tipping in a pass from Alyssa More to put the Brewers in front, 3-2.
The game remained a one-goal game for the next 23 minutes of action. With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Mikayla Young scored on a rebound for Vassar to put the game out of reach for the Hawks.
Hartwick gets back into Empire 8 play on Saturday at Wright Stadium. The Hawks host Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 p.m.
